Tourist attractions in Athens are what you would expect from Europe’s oldest city with ancient monuments and museums galore. This city is an open-air museum with ancient sights literally on every corner.
Things to see and do in Athens
The Acropolis
Obviously any trip to Athens wouldn’t be complete without visiting the iconic Acropolis and its Parthenon. It may be a 2,500-year-old ruin, but it still has the wow factor. It’s even worth a trip up there just for the incredible views of sprawling Athens.
The New Acropolis Museum
So you’ve visited the rock, now visit the museum – all $200 million of it. The glass and concrete structure is a sight in itself, and is one of the most interesting and contemporary museums in the world. One of Athens’ attractions not to be missed.
National Archaeology Museum
Another museum? Well this is Athens after all, and this isn’t just any old museum, it’s the museum with the world’s largest collection of artifacts from Greek antiquity – a must for anyone slightly interested in European history.
Plaka
If seeing all the sights has left you with a few corns and calluses, rest those weary feet in one of the many cafes of the Plaka district by the Acropolis. The area is like a little Greek village within the bustling city centre.
Gazi
If you’re looking for a party then go no further than the Gazi district, the new ‘in place’ to be in Athens. Here you’ll find some of the city’s best bars and clubs, and an array of cafes and restaurants.
National Gardens
If you want to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city then check out the National Gardens. Great for the kids, this huge park has a little zoo, duck pond and a playground.
Island Hopping
Head down to Piraeus port and jump on a boat to any of Greece’s many islands. The closest, Aegina, Poros and Hydra are only a quick ferry ride away, but transport you to a beautiful scenic Greece lost in time.
